Egypt has welcomed the appointment of Hussein Al-Sheikh as Vice Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and Vice President of Palestine.

The move, announced on Sunday, aligns with Palestinian reform efforts outlined during the Extraordinary Arab Summit in Cairo earlier this year, according to Egypt’s Foreign Ministry.

Egypt sees Al-Sheikh’s appointment as a step toward reinforcing Palestinian unity and supporting the Palestinian people's pursuit of their rights. Cairo reaffirmed its steadfast support for the Palestinian Authority and its efforts to establish an independent Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The Egyptian Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, personally congratulated Al-Sheikh, expressing confidence in his leadership during this critical phase.

Hussein Al-Sheikh, a veteran figure in Palestinian politics, has served as Secretary-General of the PLO Executive Committee since 2022 and has been a longtime member of Fatah’s Central Committee.

His successor as Secretary-General will be chosen in the coming days.
