France, one of the Palestinian Authority's main backers, on Sunday called on Palestinian leaders to "reverse their decision" to postpone legislative and presidential elections until September 2027 and to hold the votes "as soon as possible."
The delay "once again deprives the Palestinian people of the right to express themselves democratically at the ballot box," a French foreign ministry spokesperson said in a statement. It comes 20 years after the last national election and five years after the postponement of legislative polls planned for 2021.
"It is urgent to give them back their voice and allow them to choose their representatives in free and transparent elections," the spokesperson added.
