Israel announced Sunday that it had killed Ali Moussa Dakdouk, one of Hezbollah's most senior commanders, in a strike in southern Lebanon carried out over the weekend.

Dakdouk was no ordinary target. The IDF described him as commander of the personal protection unit of the late Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah,  killed by Israel in November 2024, and a senior figure in the elite Radwan unit as well as the Nasr strategic operations force.

His name was well known in Washington long before Sunday's announcement. Dakdouk had been held as a prisoner by American forces in Iraq from 2007 to 2012, and remained on the US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctions list until his death.

The IDF celebrated the strike on its X account, hailing the elimination of "one of Hezbollah's most senior officials »,  a significant blow to the group's command structure at a moment when it is already described by Lebanese officials as strategically and militarily defeated.

Dakdouk's killing underscores Israel's sustained campaign to systematically dismantle Hezbollah's leadership, following the elimination of Nasrallah and a string of other senior figures over the past year.

For Washington, the death of a man who spent five years in American custody and remained sanctioned by the US Treasury will be noted with quiet satisfaction.
