The Israeli army announced Saturday the establishment of a "yellow line" of demarcation in southern Lebanon, mirroring a similar boundary drawn in Gaza.

In a military statement, the army said its forces had identified armed individuals crossing from north of the line and approaching Israeli troops in a manner that posed an "immediate threat », prompting airstrikes and artillery fire in several sectors of southern Lebanon.

"Immediately after their identification, and in order to remove this threat, the Air Force and ground forces attacked the terrorists in several sectors of southern Lebanon", the statement read, adding that Israel is "authorised to take necessary measures in self-defence », and that such defensive actions are "not limited during the ceasefire period."

The ceasefire, brokered by US President Donald Trump and effective since midnight Friday, was accepted by both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun.
