"Less than two weeks ago, Israel, Lebanon and the United States concluded a historic framework agreement. These discussions must continue next week in Rome," Saar declared, adding that Israel has "no territorial ambitions in Lebanon."
The Rome talks represent the next step in implementing the framework agreement signed in Washington on June 26 — a landmark accord aimed at ending the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah and establishing the conditions for a full Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon.
Saar's statement on territorial ambitions comes in direct response to Prime Minister Netanyahu's controversial remarks last week on Fox News, in which he claimed some Lebanese Christian villages had asked to be annexed by Israel, comments that sparked an immediate backlash in Beirut and complicated the diplomatic atmosphere ahead of the Rome round.
For Lebanon, which has staked considerable political capital on the direct negotiation track, the Rome meeting represents a critical opportunity to translate the Washington framework into concrete security arrangements and a clear timeline for Israeli withdrawal from the buffer zone it currently occupies in the south.
