Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian held talks in Moscow on Tuesday on the sidelines of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum summit, discussing ongoing negotiations, the Strait of Hormuz and energy supplies.

According to Doha, the two leaders reviewed regional developments. Iranian state television, for its part, highlighted their desire to deepen political and economic ties between the two countries.

The meeting came a day after senior Saudi, Pakistani and Turkish officials visited Tehran to discuss ways to prevent a return to hostilities, following a series of US and Israeli threats against Iran. Tehran described those talks as “very good.”

Qatar has been involved for months in mediation efforts to end the war triggered in late February by joint US and Israeli strikes on Iran, which retaliated by targeting Gulf states allied with Washington.

Doha, however, wants to see concrete steps. “The ball is now in Iran’s court,” said Ibrahim al-Hashmi, an official at Qatar’s foreign ministry. Tehran, he said, must “stop threatening the countries of the region and reopen the Strait of Hormuz” to demonstrate its good faith.
