Russia has secretly helped Iran develop advanced supersonic cruise missiles, in what the Financial Times describes as one of the most significant known transfers of strategic military technology from Moscow to Tehran, according to an investigation published Wednesday.
The existence of the program, which began in 2023 and continued through the Israeli-American war against Iran, was uncovered through leaked Russian correspondence, travel documents and analysis of military patents, the FT reports.
The clandestine, multi-year initiative, codenamed C430L, mobilized some of Russia's most experienced missile specialists to help Iran develop a new class of weapons capable of threatening American aircraft carriers and other warships in the Middle East.
"The primary goal of C430L is to help Iran develop a ramjet propulsion system, an engine that allows a cruise missile to fly at several times the speed of sound.
Missile experts and military specialists said this technology was most likely intended for anti-ship and land-attack cruise missiles," the British newspaper explains. "Such a program would require political sign-off from Russia's highest levels," an Iranian missile expert told the FT.
While Iran has developed increasingly sophisticated ballistic missiles in recent years, mastering supersonic cruise missile technology has remained a major gap in its arsenal, the FT notes, which would explain Tehran's reliance on Russian expertise.
"Tehran's efforts to close this gap, through domestic military engineering, illicit acquisitions abroad and attempts to reverse-engineer foreign systems, are part of a strategy coordinated at the highest levels for decades," the investigation continues.
Ukrainian and Western officials have accused Russia in recent months of providing military support to Iran during its war against the United States and Israel, including satellite imagery, drone assistance and weapons components.
The C430L program represents a deeper form of cooperation, the FT argues, with Moscow helping Tehran acquire the know-how needed to develop its own advanced strategic weapons system.
