The United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Cyprus have reaffirmed their strategic partnership during the official visit of President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Cyprus on 14 December 2025, marking the first visit by an Emirati president to the country.

President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides welcomed the UAE leader, describing the visit as a historic milestone that reflects the growing depth of relations between the two countries.

Both leaders underlined their shared commitment to further strengthening cooperation through an ambitious and forward-looking agenda, with a focus on trade, investment, energy cooperation and regional interconnectivity.

During their talks, the two presidents agreed to develop a Joint Action Plan aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation and supporting the implementation of new projects.

The plan will be overseen by the foreign ministries of both countries. They also welcomed a high-level UAE business delegation and the holding of a Cyprus-UAE business roundtable to promote trade and investment opportunities across key sectors.

Several areas for expanded cooperation were identified, including renewable energy, infrastructure development, defence, shipping, maritime cooperation and large-scale joint ventures involving both the public and private sectors.

The leaders highlighted the importance of upcoming platforms such as the Investment and Finance Forum in Abu Dhabi and future energy conferences as vehicles to advance economic ties and clean technology development.

President Christodoulides briefed his counterpart on Cyprus’s upcoming presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2026, noting his country’s intention to strengthen EU engagement with the Southern Neighbourhood and deepen EU-GCC relations. Both sides agreed on aligned priorities to further enhance relations between the European Union and the UAE.

On regional and international issues, Cyprus and the UAE reiterated their commitment to a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus question under UN auspices, based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation in line with UN resolutions.

The UAE reaffirmed its support for Cyprus’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while Cyprus reiterated its support for the UAE’s sovereignty, including over the islands of Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb and Abu Musa.

The two leaders also addressed developments in the Middle East, recognizing the Amalthea Cyprus Maritime Corridor as a key humanitarian lifeline for Gaza.

They agreed to continue cooperation with international partners to sustain and expand the corridor in support of humanitarian efforts and future peace initiatives.

Both presidents reaffirmed their support for a two-State solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and rejected any attempts to forcibly displace the Palestinian population.

Discussions further covered the situations in Sudan and Ukraine. The leaders called for an immediate humanitarian truce in Sudan and reaffirmed support for civilian protection, humanitarian access and an inclusive political transition.

On Ukraine, both sides reiterated their support for a just and lasting peace based on international law, while highlighting their respective roles in humanitarian assistance and dialogue.

The joint statement concluded by reaffirming the strength of the Cyprus-UAE strategic partnership and expressing satisfaction with the progress made in expanding cooperation across a wide range of areas, including trade, energy, defence, tourism, education, culture and infrastructure development.
