US embassies in Jerusalem, Baghdad and Amman issued security alerts Saturday urging American citizens to exercise "heightened vigilance," as tensions flare between Iran and the United States. Americans were also told to "consider departing, or be prepared to depart should there be escalation."

The US embassy in Beirut, for its part, had not issued a security warning at the time of writing.

"Due to heightened tensions in the Middle East, the security environment remains complex with the potential for unforeseen escalation.

Americans currently in the Middle East should exercise caution and heightened vigilance and should be prepared for flight cancellations, periodic airspace closures, and potential travel disruptions," the US diplomatic missions in Israel, Iraq and Jordan wrote in identical alerts.

"Airlines in the region have postponed resuming previous flight schedules; others have cancelled certain routes. Americans in the region should consider departing, or be prepared to depart should there be escalation," they added.

President Donald Trump threatened Friday to hit Iran "very hard," as US media reported that Washington was weighing a fresh round of massive strikes over the weekend, which Israel could join, reportedly targeting energy infrastructure. Iran struck US military bases in Jordan on Wednesday, prompting joint US-Saudi strikes on Iran-aligned armed groups in Iraq, as well as a major wave of American strikes on Iranian territory.
