US Vice President JD Vance on Tuesday refused to endorse Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of Israel’s October 27 legislative elections, breaking with President Donald Trump.
“I’m not against supporting him, I’m not for supporting him, I’m not getting involved in Israeli elections,” Vance told an American reporter who pressed him on the issue. He added that his focus was on American candidates and the US midterm elections on November 3.
On Sunday, Trump gave Netanyahu his “full and complete” support, drawing thanks from the outgoing prime minister for what he called “tremendous” backing ahead of a vote expected to be close.
Vance’s restraint contrasts with his record in other foreign elections. He strongly backed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán before April’s legislative elections, which ended up ousting Orbán from power.
Last year in Germany, he met Alice Weidel, leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), and criticized mainstream parties’ “firewall” against the party.
