The UAE capital of Abu Dhabi announced the launch of free WiFi facility in public spaces on Friday.

The Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) announced that free public WiFi coverage will be available on public transport buses, beaches, and in public parks.

“The initiative aims to support Abu Dhabi’s smart city development project and advance its digital infrastructure,” it said in a statement shared by Abu Dhabi Media Office.

The initiative aims to provide free internet coverage at various locations, including public parks – 19 in Abu Dhabi, 11 in Al Ain, and 14 in the Al-Dhafra Region – and will soon be available at the Abu Dhabi Corniche beach and Al-Bateen beach.

In 2019, Abu Dhabi had announced that public buses plying in more than 500 routes had been equipped with free WiFi.

“Abu Dhabi’s global ranking at 13 out of 141 cities in the IMD Smart City Index 2023 reaffirms our commitment to openness, innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability, validating our dedication to smart city development,” Chairman of DMT Mohamed Ali al-Shorafa was quoted as saying by ADMO.

Neighboring Dubai also has public WiFi services on its public transportation, including the Metro and buses. In addition, most malls, airports, and shopping centers provide free internet connectivity.

Earlier this year, Sharjah had announced the rollout of free WiFi service on its intercity buses.
