Interim Syrian President Ahmad Sharaa is set to visit Ankara on Tuesday at the invitation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish presidency announced on Monday.

This will be his second international visit since assuming office, following his trip to Saudi Arabia last Sunday.

The announcement was made by Fahrettin Altun, Turkey’s Director of Communications, via a statement on X.

"The transitional president of the Syrian Arab Republic, Ahmad al-Sharaa, will visit Ankara on Tuesday, February 4, at the invitation of our president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan." – Fahrettin Altun

The meeting between the Syrian and Turkish leaders takes place in a sensitive diplomatic context, as tensions persist between Damascus and Ankara, particularly concerning the situation in Syria and bilateral relations.

Since taking office, Ahmad al-Sharaa appears to be pursuing diplomatic re-engagement and redefining Syria’s foreign relations. His first visit to Saudi Arabia, followed by this trip to Turkey, signals a willingness to open dialogue with key regional players.

The interim Syrian president’s back-to-back visits to Saudi Arabia and Turkey could indicate a significant shift in Syria’s foreign policy.
