Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides is set to visit Cairo on February 17, following an invitation from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi.
The visit will mark the signing of two significant agreements concerning the development of the Cronos and Aphrodite gas fields in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
Announcing the visit on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, President Christodoulides stated:
"Following an invitation by Egyptian President Sisi, I will be in Cairo on February 17 for the signing ceremony of two important agreements for the development of the Cronos and Aphrodite gas resources in Cyprus’ EEZ. Another step in fostering growth in our region."
The agreements highlight Cyprus' efforts to strengthen cooperation with its neighbors in the Eastern Mediterranean. Nicosia already enjoys close ties with Israel and considers Egypt a strategic partner. By working together on gas resource development, both countries aim to bolster economic growth and solidify their roles as key players in the region's energy landscape.
The Cronos and Aphrodite gas fields, located within Cyprus’ EEZ, represent significant energy assets for the country. Their development is not only crucial for Cyprus’ energy ambitions but also for fostering regional energy collaboration. Egypt’s established infrastructure, including its LNG facilities, positions it as an essential partner for exporting gas from these fields to global markets.
This partnership reflects broader efforts by Eastern Mediterranean nations to leverage their natural resources while promoting stability and cooperation in a region often marked by geopolitical tensions.
President Christodoulides’ visit underscores Cyprus’ commitment to deepening ties with Egypt and enhancing regional growth. The agreements to be signed in Cairo are expected to strengthen bilateral relations and create opportunities for energy investments that benefit both countries.
As Nicosia continues to position itself as a hub for energy cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean, this partnership with Cairo is a step forward in fostering economic development and regional stability.
