Syria's General Authority for Land and Sea Ports and Customs said Tuesday that customs officers had thwarted an attempt to smuggle more than 200 hand grenades hidden inside a vehicle attempting to cross the border toward Lebanon.
A statement said the shipment, concealed in a "secret compartment," contained 226 RGC-type grenades, fragmentation explosives.
The seizure took place at Jdeidet Yabous, opposite the Masnaa border crossing in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley. A video released alongside the statement showed customs personnel arresting a person after the grenades were discovered in the car.
Syria has regularly announced seizures of arms shipments bound for Lebanon, often accusing Hezbollah of being the intended recipient. The country's new authorities remain hostile to the Shiite movement, a longtime ally of the Assad regime toppled in December 2024.
Tuesday's statement did not name the pro-Iranian party, however. During its last two wars against Israel, in 2023-2024 and again in 2026, Hezbollah relied mainly on drones, mortar shells and missiles.
The group has consistently denied Syrian accusations that weapons are being routed through its territory, even as its supply lines from Iran have been disrupted since Assad's fall. Hezbollah has repeatedly stated over the past two years that it has no presence or activity in Syria.
The seizure marks the second such interception announced by Damascus in less than a week. Last week, a source at Syria's Interior Ministry told the state news agency SANA that authorities had foiled an attempt to smuggle "sophisticated weapons and missiles" across the Syrian-Iraqi border, "destined for Hezbollah."
