A Libyan army general, Ali Ramadan al-Rayani, was killed on Sunday in an attack by unidentified gunmen at his home in the southern suburbs of Tripoli, authorities said.

Abdelhamid Dbeibah, head of the UN-recognized Government of National Unity based in Tripoli, condemned the killing, describing al-Rayani as a "martyr" who died defending his home against "a group of criminals."

Few details have been released about the assailants or their motives. Dbeibah has ordered the military prosecutor to launch an urgent and thorough investigation to uncover the circumstances of the crime.

According to the Libyan news outlet al-Wasat, witnesses reported that al-Rayani managed to kill three of his attackers before being fatally shot.

Libya remains deeply divided, with rival governments based in Tripoli and the east. The attack follows a February assassination attempt on Adel Jomaa, Minister of State for Prime Ministerial Affairs, who survived after being treated in Rome.
