At least 13 Iranian pilgrims have died during the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported on Saturday.
The Iranian Red Crescent attributed the deaths to extreme heat, with temperatures in Mecca and Medina reaching 47°C (116.6°F) in recent days.
The agency recorded over 138,000 medical consultations for Iranian pilgrims due to heat-related issues. This year, approximately 86,700 Iranians took part in the pilgrimage.
In 2024, more than 1,300 pilgrims died during Hajj, including 22 Iranians, as temperatures soared close to 52°C. Climate change continues to intensify heatwaves, posing severe risks to participants in large-scale gatherings like the Hajj.
