Seven migrants drowned in the Aegean Sea off Turkey's western coast after falling overboard when the Turkish coastguard attempted to intercept their boat, according to an official statement released by the Turkish coastguard.

The victims were part of a group of around 40 people who had set off on an inflatable boat on Thursday evening from near Kusadasi, a popular Turkish seaside resort located about 100 kilometers south of Izmir. Kusadasi lies directly opposite the Greek island of Samos, approximately 15 kilometers across the Aegean Sea.

During the interception attempt, seven passengers fell into the water. Three bodies were recovered shortly after the incident, and four more were found the following day. Despite the tragedy, the coastguard successfully rescued 18 adults and 13 minors unharmed.

The short yet hazardous route between Turkey's coast and the nearby Greek islands—including Samos, Rhodes, and Lesbos—continues to be a major gateway for migrants attempting to enter the European Union. This path is notorious for shipwrecks and perilous conditions.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 2,333 migrants either died or went missing in the Mediterranean Sea in the past year, highlighting the severe risks associated with such journeys.

This tragedy underscores the persistent dangers faced by migrants and refugees attempting to reach Europe via unsafe and overcrowded vessels. It also raises ongoing concerns about the effectiveness of current migration policies and the need for comprehensive solutions to address the migrant crisis.
