The European Union is ready to send an observation mission to the Palestinian legislative elections expected at the end of November, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced Tuesday.
"Palestinians have the right to choose their representatives in credible, inclusive and transparent elections," she wrote on X. "After nearly 20 years without a parliamentary vote, these elections would offer a long-awaited opportunity to renew the legitimacy of Palestinian institutions."
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has set November 28, 2026 as the date for the legislative vote, followed by a presidential election expected in the first quarter of 2027.
If held, it would be the first parliamentary vote in the Palestinian territories in two decades. The last one, in 2006, was won by Hamas, which defeated Abbas's Fatah, then the dominant force in Palestinian politics.
The international community fears a postponement, in particular because of logistical difficulties.
Elections are among the reforms demanded by the international donors who fund the Palestinian Authority, which is criticized for corruption, institutional paralysis and an erosion of its legitimacy.
