The European Union announced on Monday that it will set up a mission to train the Lebanese army and security forces, separate from the UN peacekeeping force UNIFIL.
Foreign ministers of the 27 member states, meeting in Luxembourg, decided to establish the mission with an initial three-year mandate, the EU Council said in a statement. It is to have about 150 personnel.
The mission will help the Lebanese army and security forces "strengthen territorial control, border security and internal security," EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said, as quoted in the statement.
Lebanese customs, working with General Security, foiled a major smuggling attempt on Saturday at Beirut’s Rafic Hariri International Airport, seizing 46.7 kilos of cocaine, the largest drug bust in the airport’s history, French-language daily L’Orient-Le Jour reported.
