A person was killed on Saturday in a car explosion in Damascus, the Syrian capital, reported the official news agency Sana. No details about the victim's identity have been provided.

The agency, citing a police official, reported "the martyrdom of a person in the explosion of an explosive device in their car in the Mazzeh district," without giving further details.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), based in the UK but with a vast network of sources in the war-torn country, the explosion caused panic in the area, where three other vehicles caught fire.

The explosion took place in an upscale district housing the Iranian embassy and its consulate, which was destroyed on April 1 in an attack attributed to Israel.

The Lebanese Islamist movement Hezbollah, an ally of Damascus and Hamas as well as Tehran, and a sworn enemy of Israel, has a significant presence in this area.
