German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier embarked on an official visit to Turkey on Wednesday, where he met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara.

The meeting covered a range of topics including bilateral cooperation, immigration issues, the ongoing conflict in Gaza, the Iranian threat, and efforts to ease tensions in the Middle East.

The discussions between Steinmeier and Erdogan were comprehensive, touching on the critical aspects of both bilateral relations and broader geopolitical challenges.

The leaders discussed ways to enhance cooperation between Germany and Turkey, particularly in light of the significant Turkish community in Germany, which numbers approximately 2.8 million people, including both Turkish citizens and those who have acquired German nationality.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to reflect on the historical ties between the two countries, especially considering the scale of Turkish immigration to Germany.

This immigration began in earnest in the 1960s when West Germany (FRG) signed a labor recruitment agreement with Turkey to address labor shortages during Germany's post-war economic miracle, known as the "Wirtschaftswunder."

This led to several waves of Turkish immigration, primarily for family reunification purposes, which have since shaped the social and cultural fabric of modern Germany.

Current discussions on immigration are particularly pertinent, given the ongoing challenges and opportunities presented by the large Turkish diaspora in Germany.

The talks aimed to address integration issues and the role of the Turkish community in fostering closer ties between the two nations.

The conversation also ventured into sensitive geopolitical areas, including the ongoing violence in Gaza and the perceived threat from Iran, with both leaders expressing a need for concerted efforts to mitigate tensions in the Middle East.
