The Israeli military announced Monday it had struck a major facility inside Imam Hossein University in Tehran, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' premier military academic institution , targeting what it described as a covert weapons research and development operation hidden behind civilian cover.
"Under the guise of civilian activities, advanced weapons research and development were being conducted within the university," the Israeli military said in a statement.
The strikes hit multiple military infrastructure sites within the university compound, with the IDF saying it destroyed wind tunnels located beneath the facility, the university's chemistry centre, and the mechanical development group's technology and engineering centre, all allegedly used for weapons development.
"One of the IRGC's primary military infrastructure sites has been struck," the military stated, adding that the operation was designed to "inflict significant damage on the regime's weapons production and development capabilities."
The university's high-profile connections were not lost on Israeli officials. Senior Iranian figures, including former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, had previously visited the institution, underlining its strategic importance to the Islamic Republic's military apparatus.
