Jordan's King Abdullah II has expressed his "full support" for the international conference backing Lebanon's armed forces and Internal Security Forces (ISF), for which a preparatory meeting is set to take place in Paris on September 17, Lebanon's army reported Tuesday, two days after the Hashemite monarch met with Lebanese Army Commander-in-Chief Rodolphe Haykal in Amman.
Paris will host the September 17 preparatory meeting ahead of the broader conference in support of Lebanon's army and internal security forces, with military delegations, experts and representatives of governments and international organizations from several countries in attendance, according to the Lebanese presidency.
The announcement comes as the Lebanese military is called upon to play a critical role, deploying in southern Lebanon and working toward Hezbollah's disarmament. It also marks an opportunity for France to assert its presence in Lebanon, at a time when the United States - and especially Israel - appear reluctant to see Paris play a role in resolving the conflict in the south.
During Sunday's meeting at Al-Husseiniya Palace, King Abdullah II reaffirmed that Jordan stood "alongside brotherly Lebanon," backing its efforts to preserve "its security and sovereignty." The audience was attended by Jordan's Joint Chief of Staff, General Youssef al-Hneiti, and the director of the King's office, Alaa Batayneh.
Military cooperation between Beirut and Amman has deepened over the past year.
In July 2025, General Haykal traveled to Jordan, where the two armies underscored their "strategic partnership," expertise exchange and cooperation across multiple areas, with the Lebanese army chief visiting King Abdullah II's special forces training center.
In January 2026, his Jordanian counterpart Youssef al-Hneiti visited Beirut, where discussions focused on training, capacity-building and continued Jordanian support for the Lebanese army, a visit that also saw Amman deliver food aid to the military institution.
