Some Salafist figures recently criticized the Al-Aqsa Flood Operation launched against Israeli on October 7.

Oman’s Grand Mufti Sheikh Ahmed bin Hamad Al Khalili rejected their view and said Jihad against those who attack Muslims is an obligation based on the Quran.

In a statement published on his X account, he cited verse 36 of Surah Al-Ahzab, “The believing men and women must not feel free to do something in their affairs other than that which has been already decided for them by God and His Messenger. One who disobeys God and His Messenger is in plain error,“ and said Jihad against invaders is a necessity and no one is allowed to distort divine commandments, because it would mean deviation.

He said based on Verses 45-47 of Surah At-Tawbah, if the enemies attack Muslims, it would be necessary for Muslims to launch Jihad against them.

The interpretations of the Quran are varied, often excessive, and sometimes extremist
