Sanctions against Israel: OIC's divided stance reflects broader tensions

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) concluded its 15th summit in Banjul, Gambia, with a strong denunciation of what it termed "genocide" in Gaza, urging its 57 member countries to impose broad sanctions against Israel. This call marks a continuation of the organization's firm stance in support of the Palestinian cause but also highlights the profound divisions within the group, particularly among African member states who seek a more balanced approach to peace.

The resolution adopted by the OIC includes demands for its members to apply diplomatic, political, and legal pressures and to enforce sanctions at various levels including economic, sports, cultural, and international arenas against Israel. Moreover, the organization has called for "an immediate, permanent, and unconditional ceasefire" and seeks to halt the export of arms and ammunition used by the Israeli military in Gaza.

Despite the strong wording of the resolution, the summit revealed significant rifts within the OIC, notably with the limited presence of African heads of state. 

Only a handful of African leaders attended, reflecting a broader reluctance among African nations to fully endorse the punitive measures proposed against Israel. These countries prefer to explore ways to facilitate peace without exacerbating tensions.

This isn't the first time the OIC has faced internal discord over its stance on Israel. In November 2023, a joint summit with the Arab League in Riyadh also showcased the organization's condemnations of Israeli actions in Gaza. 

However, it stopped short of imposing economic and political sanctions, underscoring ongoing regional divisions. These divisions were again apparent at the Banjul summit, highlighting the complex dynamics at play within the organization as it struggles to unify its members around a common approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The OIC's latest summit not only reiterated its commitment to supporting Palestinian rights and protecting Muslim holy sites but also cast a spotlight on the deep divisions within the organization. 

As the OIC continues to navigate these internal divides, the effectiveness and unity of its actions against Israel remain uncertain. Moving forward, the challenge for the OIC will be to reconcile these divergent views in a way that fosters genuine and lasting peace in the region.
