Saudi Arabia’s 90-year-old King Salman bin Abdulaziz underwent medical examinations on Friday at a hospital in Riyadh, according to a statement from the royal court.

The king, who has ruled the world’s largest crude oil exporter since 2015, “is undergoing medical tests today (Friday) at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh,” the royal court said in a brief announcement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency, without providing further details.

While King Salman remains the head of state, the kingdom’s day-to-day affairs are largely overseen by his son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who was appointed heir apparent in 2017.

The health of the Saudi monarch is rarely discussed publicly. In 2024, however, the royal court announced that King Salman had suffered from a lung infection, from which he later recovered. Prior to that, his last hospitalization was in May 2022, when he was admitted for medical tests, including a colonoscopy, and spent about a week in hospital “to rest,” according to SPA at the time.

No additional information was provided on Friday regarding the nature or duration of the current examinations.
