Syria's Internal Security Forces have arrested Mard Mohammad, a former brigadier general in Bashar al-Assad's Republican Guard, known as the "Guardian of the Capital," the force said on its Telegram channel.

According to the statement, Mohammad was a field commander in operations launched by Assad's forces across Damascus Countryside, including Qaboun, Al-Hameh, Wadi Barada, Qudsaya, Ain Terma and Jobar. It said he also helped lead operations under the name "God's Promise Is True."

His arrest follows that of another senior Republican Guard officer, former Maj. Gen. Ahmad Mohammad Ismail, on September 19. Military records cited by the security forces show he rose from platoon commander to company commander in the Second Battalion of the 101st Airborne Regiment.

In early 2016, he was named head of operations for the regiment and, the forces said, personally led attacks on Aleppo, Daraa and Eastern Ghouta.
