Togo considers Israel a close and reliable ally in its efforts to combat terrorism, according to Kanka-Malik Natchaba, Togo's Minister of Higher Education and Research.

In an interview with Israeli news channel I24, the minister highlighted the importance of Israeli expertise in supporting Togo’s security operations.

“Togo has long benefited from Israel’s technological and strategic know-how, particularly in areas related to counterterrorism,” Natchaba stated, emphasizing the historic ties between the two nations.

For several years, northern Togo has faced terrorist incursions, largely attributed to Islamist militant groups crossing over from neighboring Burkina Faso, where instability has surged. In response, the Togolese government has stepped up its security collaboration with international partners, including Israel, France, the United States, and Turkey.

These partnerships aim to strengthen Togo’s defensive capabilities, improve intelligence-sharing, and equip local forces to deal with the growing threat in the region.

Longstanding Bilateral Ties

Togo and Israel have maintained close diplomatic relations since the 1960s, and cooperation has steadily expanded to cover security, agriculture, technology, and education.

The minister’s remarks come amid increased international attention on West Africa’s Sahel region, where terrorist groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda and ISIS continue to pose a major threat to stability.

According to Natchaba, Togo remains committed to enhancing its national resilience and is grateful for the support of its international allies, with Israel playing a key role in this effort.
