The deal that stops the fighting but solves little
The U.S.-Israeli war on Iran was meant to break the Islamic Republic. Instead, the warring sides are edging towards an interim agreement that would leave Iran battered but not broken.

Togo’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Robert Dussey, held talks on Thursday in Jerusalem with his Israeli counterpart, Gideon Saar.
The meeting forms part of ongoing efforts to further strengthen diplomatic relations between Togo and Israel, two nations that have maintained close and friendly ties since Togo’s independence.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Israeli foreign minister praised the longstanding friendship between the two countries and expressed gratitude for Togo’s diplomatic support, particularly following the events of October 7.
“I thanked the minister for his friendship and for Togo’s support. We discussed the shared threat of terrorism facing West Africa and the Middle East, as well as ways to combat it effectively,” Gideon Saar said.
Togo has consistently demonstrated its diplomatic backing for Israel on the international stage, maintaining a position of dialogue, cooperation, and solidarity over the years. This support reflects Lomé’s commitment to stable bilateral relations and its broader engagement in international security and peace efforts.
The talks also addressed wider global security challenges. The Israeli minister reiterated his firm stance on Iran’s nuclear program, stressing that Iran must not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons. “The world’s most dangerous regime must not obtain the world’s most dangerous weapon,” he stated, calling for increased vigilance from the international community.
Beyond security issues, both ministers reaffirmed their shared determination to deepen bilateral cooperation. Relations between Lomé and Jerusalem are built on active collaboration in key sectors such as agriculture, health, and professional training.
For decades, Israel has supported Togo through the transfer of modern agricultural technologies, capacity building in healthcare, and the training of Togolese professionals.
This high-level meeting once again underscores the strength of the partnership between Togo and Israel, highlighting a relationship based on trust, mutual respect, and a long history of diplomatic support and strategic cooperation.

The Israeli military said it had intercepted rockets fired by Hezbollah into Israel on Wednesday, while Lebanese security sources said an Israeli strike hit a car near Beirut, testing a U.S.-mediated deal that aims to get the sides to curb attacks.
Donald Trump is nothing if not an optimist. His latest statements on Iran, declaring that Tehran has agreed never to acquire a nuclear weapon and musing about a future meeting with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, project a confidence that is either visionary or deeply puzzling, depending on your vantage point.
