Turkey welcomed on Tuesday the United States' decision to remove Syria from its list of countries supporting terrorism, a major step toward easing sanctions on Damascus, and expressed hope the move would strengthen security and stability in a country devastated by more than a decade of war.

"We believe this decision will give fresh momentum to efforts to strengthen Syria's ties with the international community and to establish lasting security and stability in the country," Turkey's foreign ministry said in a statement.
