Turkish Airlines, the national carrier of Turkey, has resumed its flights to Libya, ending a decade-long hiatus.
The inaugural flight took off from Istanbul to Tripoli on Thursday, marking the beginning of a new chapter in air travel between the two nations. Additional flights to Misrata and Benghazi are set to follow, with services scheduled for three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
During his visit to Mitiga Airport in Tripoli for the launch, Turkish Airlines CEO Bilal Eksi highlighted the "historical ties" between Turkey and Libya, emphasizing the significance of these renewed connections. Eksi's remarks, quoted in a press release, underlined the airline's ambition to expand its network across Africa, where it already serves 62 destinations. "We believe that tourism and trade will continue to rise in the medium and long term with the development of industrial investments," he stated.
Turkish Airlines has grown to become one of the leading global airlines, serving 346 destinations in 130 countries. This expansion into Libya is seen as a strategic move, not only in terms of strengthening historical bonds but also in fostering economic growth through tourism and trade.
Libya, home to Africa's most abundant oil reserves, has struggled to find stability following years of conflict after the overthrow and death of dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The country is currently governed by rival administrations in Tripoli in the west and Benghazi in the east.
Turkey has consistently supported the Tripoli-based government. However, in a recent development, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced last month the upcoming reopening of Turkey's consulate in Benghazi. This move signifies a warming of relations and a step towards unity in a country long torn by internal divisions.
The resumption of flights by Turkish Airlines is a beacon of hope for improved connectivity and economic resurgence in Libya, promising to enhance bilateral relations and unlock potential growth in tourism and commerce between the two nations.
