The United Arab Emirates has welcomed the signing of the peace agreement between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the Republic of Rwanda, describing it as a pivotal step toward restoring peace, security, and stability across Africa.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of State, commended the leadership of U.S. President Donald Trump and Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, for their active roles in facilitating the landmark accord.

He further praised the African Union's mediation efforts and the diplomatic momentum generated by the joint SADC-EAC summit.

However, the UAE also acknowledged the key role played by Togo in the success of this peace initiative.

Acting on behalf of the African Union, Togo was designated as a mediator in the months leading up to the agreement.

President Faure Gnassingbé and his Foreign Minister, Robert Dussey, led quiet but effective shuttle diplomacy, creating conditions conducive to a negotiated settlement between Kinshasa and Kigali.

“This agreement is a powerful testament to the will of both parties to resolve their disputes through dialogue and peaceful means,” said Sheikh Shakhboot. He emphasized that the successful outcome demonstrates the value of international cooperation and African-led solutions to resolve longstanding conflicts.

The peace deal, signed in Washington on Friday, commits Rwanda to withdraw its forces from eastern Congo within 90 days and calls for the launch of a regional economic integration framework during the same period.

Sheikh Shakhboot highlighted the UAE’s longstanding ties with African nations, including the DRC and Rwanda, and reaffirmed the Emirates’ unwavering support for initiatives that promote security, peace, and sustainable development on the continent.

The agreement is widely seen as a major diplomatic victory for all parties involved, particularly Togo, whose discreet but decisive mediation was instrumental in achieving this long-sought breakthrough.
