The United Arab Emirates registered its highest temperature ever recorded in May on Friday, according to the country’s National Center of Meteorology (NCM).
In a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the NCM announced that the temperature reached 50.4°C (122.7°F) in Al Shawamekh, located in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
"This is the highest temperature recorded across the country today," the agency stated, confirming that it is the hottest May day since temperature records began in 2003.
Rising Temperatures Across the Gulf
This record comes amid widening concerns over extreme heat events in the Gulf region, where climate change is intensifying already harsh weather patterns. The UAE, along with neighboring Gulf countries, has faced increasingly frequent heatwaves, raising challenges for public health, infrastructure, and energy systems.
Authorities continue to urge residents to take precautions, including limiting outdoor activities during peak daytime hours and staying hydrated.
Meteorologists warn that higher-than-average temperatures may persist into the coming weeks, signaling a hotter-than-usual summer for the region.
