Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani held a key meeting with Mohamed Al Hassan, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, to discuss the future of cooperation between Iraq and the UN, the Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported.
The meeting, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Media Office, focused on the ongoing collaboration with the United Nations and the steps surrounding the conclusion of the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).
Al-Sudani expressed his appreciation for the valuable role played by UNAMI over the past twenty years, highlighting its contribution to Iraq’s recovery and development during critical phases. He reaffirmed the government's willingness to continue working closely with UN agencies, especially in the fields of administrative reform and climate change mitigation.
Al-Sudani also underlined the urgent need for regional cooperation and coordination, emphasizing that collective security remains a top priority for Iraq and its neighbors.
In response, the UN Special Representative reiterated the UN’s commitment to supporting Iraq’s national agenda and vision, particularly in navigating regional and global challenges.
The discussions signal a new chapter in Iraq–UN relations as the country seeks greater autonomy while maintaining strategic partnerships for long-term development and stability.
