Brazil has officially announced its support for Khaled El-Enany, the Egyptian candidate for the position of Director-General of UNESCO. The elections are scheduled for the end of 2025, with El-Enany emerging as a strong contender, backed by key international organizations.

Khaled El-Enany, a former Egyptian Minister of Tourism, has already secured the support of influential entities such as the African Union, the Arab League and France.

Despite his growing international backing, the race for UNESCO’s top position remains competitive, particularly within the Arab world. Reports suggest that candidates from the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar may announce their bids in the coming months, adding to the contest’s complexity.

Additionally, Audrey Azoulay, the current Director-General, may seek re-election, further intensifying the competition. Azoulay, a French national, has led UNESCO since 2017, and her potential candidacy could divide some of the existing support for El-Enany.

With a year remaining before the elections, the outcome remains unpredictable. El-Enany’s candidacy symbolizes a significant push from Egypt to lead the global cultural and educational organization, but the evolving political dynamics, especially within the Arab world, could reshape the race.
