Chinese President Xi Jinping arrives in Egypt Tuesday evening on his first visit in a decade, as the war in the Middle East and US sanctions increasingly threaten Beijing's economic interests.

Seven months into a conflict showing no signs of ending, the United States recently warned countries continuing to trade with Iran that they risk being cut off from the Western financial system.

Beijing, a major partner of Tehran - particularly for oil - finds itself directly exposed and is seeking Cairo's support.

Egypt, which has long received US military aid, has participated in Middle East mediation efforts and warned in July against "escalation" following a drone attack on one of its ports.

With Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Xi is expected to discuss Iran and the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, as well as the Red Sea and Gaza, according to Cairo media.

"I look forward to renewing our bonds of friendship... to chart a new action plan deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Egypt," Xi wrote in an op-ed published Tuesday in Egyptian press.

Agreements on artificial intelligence, data centers and the Suez Canal Economic Zone are expected to be signed. China, which runs a substantial trade surplus with Egypt, has established itself as a key Middle East player, expanding energy partnerships and investments across the region.
