A devastating fire broke out in a commercial complex within the historic medina of Fez, resulting in the deaths of four people, as reported by the Moroccan news agency MAP during the night of Wednesday to Thursday.
The fire caused significant damage, injuring 26 people, three of whom are in critical condition. Approximately 25 shops suffered extensive material damage, according to local authorities cited by MAP.
An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire. Preliminary findings suggest that the blaze was triggered by an electrical short circuit during renovation work in one of the complex’s stores.
Fez's medina, a major tourist attraction, is one of the oldest and largest (covering 280 hectares) in the world. It is renowned for being one of the best-preserved historic cities in the Arab-Muslim world.
