G7 foreign ministers and the European Union's foreign policy chief on Wednesday urged Sudan's Rapid Support Forces and allied armed groups to stop all actions that could lead to further atrocities or endanger civilians in El-Obeid.
They also called on all parties, including the Sudanese army, to cease hostilities, allow aid access and engage in good-faith talks.
In a joint statement, they backed United Nations' efforts to de-escalate the crisis, called on the UN Security Council to expand the Darfur arms embargo to all of Sudan, urged external actors to halt military and financial support to the warring sides, and vowed to promote accountability for violations while supporting Sudan's unity and democratic aspirations.

The Sudanese army has conditioned any broad acceptance of a U.S. proposal for ending the country's three-year-old civil war on the full withdrawal by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces from cities it has occupied, according to documents seen by Reuters.
In the year since the Sudanese army recaptured the capital Khartoum from a paramilitary force that had seized it at the outset of civil war in 2023, more than 2 million of the 5 million people who fled their homes in the city have returned.
The UAE used an urgent session of the UN Human Rights Council on the situation in El-Obeid to deliver a stark message: there is no military solution to Sudan's conflict, and the only viable path forward is an immediate and unconditional ceasefire combined with an urgent humanitarian truce.
