The spokesperson for the Fatah movement in Gaza issued a sharp call on Saturday for Hamas to relinquish power in the territory, warning that continued control by the group could lead to the collapse of Palestinian presence in Gaza.

“Hamas must show compassion for Gaza, its children, its women, and its men,” said Mounther al-Hayek, spokesperson for Fatah, the party led by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. His comments were sent from Gaza in a message to AFP.

Al-Hayek warned of “difficult, harsh, and painful days” ahead for the people of Gaza as Israel intensifies military operations and hints at plans to forcibly displace the population or annex parts of the strip.

He urged Hamas to “step away from governance and fully understand that the coming battle—if they choose to remain in power—will lead to the end of Palestinian existence in Gaza.”

The statement comes amid growing internal tensions and worsening humanitarian conditions in the enclave, as well as international concern over Israel’s intentions regarding the future of Gaza following months of war.
