The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) will conclude its operations by December 31, 2025, following a formal request from the Iraqi government.

UNAMI spokesperson Samir Ghattas confirmed in a press interview that no discussions are underway to extend the mandate, and the decision is final.

The Iraqi government submitted a letter to the UN Secretary-General on April 8, 2024, requesting the termination of UNAMI’s mission by the end of 2025.

Established under UN Security Council Resolution 1500 (2003) at Iraq’s request and later revised by Resolution 1770 (2007), UNAMI’s mandate has been renewed annually since its inception.

Ghattas emphasized that the 23 UN development agencies operating in Iraq will continue their work unaffected by UNAMI’s closure, ensuring ongoing support for the country’s development efforts.
