Argentina produced a stunning comeback to defeat Egypt 3-2 in their Round of 16 clash at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Tuesday, overturning a two-goal deficit in the final eleven minutes to book their place in the quarter-finals.
The Pharaohs had looked set for one of the tournament's great upsets, taking a commanding lead through Yasser Ibrahim in the 54th minute and Mostafa Ziko on the hour mark. Egypt were eleven minutes from eliminating the world champions.
Then Argentina's class told.
Cristian Romero pulled one back in the 79th minute to set up a frantic finale. Lionel Messi, inevitably, levelled in the 83rd, before Enzo Fernández broke Egyptian hearts in stoppage time with the winner in the 93rd minute.
For Egypt, it is a cruel exit after a performance that deserved better. Mohamed Salah, carrying a thigh injury, watched his side come agonisingly close to a historic result before Argentina's relentless pressure finally told.
For Argentina, it is yet another demonstration of their capacity to find a way when it matters most, led, as ever, by a 37-year-old who simply refuses to let his team lose.
