A Tunisian soldier was killed and another injured on Friday in a military helicopter crash during a routine exercise, according to the Ministry of Defense.

The accident occurred "during the landing" of the helicopter in the Gafsa region in southern Tunisia, as reported by Mohamed Zekri, the ministry's spokesperson, to AFP.

"The two soldiers forming the helicopter crew were transported to the Gafsa hospital, where one succumbed to his injuries while the other remains in stable condition," added the spokesperson.

The most recent fatal military helicopter crash in Tunisia occurred in June 2023, resulting in the deaths of four soldiers when their aircraft went down in the sea.

This tragic incident underscores the inherent risks associated with military training exercises and highlights the ongoing dedication and sacrifice of military personnel.

The Ministry of Defense is expected to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the crash and prevent future occurrences.
