German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will receive Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa at the Chancellery in Berlin on Monday, a German government spokesman announced Friday.

"The Chancellor will receive the Syrian president, Ahmad al-Sharaa, at the Chancellery on Monday for his inaugural visit," spokesman Stefan Kornelius confirmed.

The meeting is expected to focus notably on the war raging across the Middle East, as Germany seeks to engage with the new Syrian leadership at a critical moment for the region.

The visit marks a significant diplomatic moment,  the first formal meeting between the new Syrian head of state and the German chancellor,  signaling Berlin's willingness to engage with Damascus as Syria navigates its post-conflict transition under new leadership.
