Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araqchi, speaking from Beirut on Friday, brazenly outlined Tehran’s conditions for a ceasefire in Lebanon.

His statement, made in the heart of a supposedly sovereign state, highlights the stark reality of Iran’s influence over Lebanon, a nation that has been under effective control by Iran through its proxy, Hezbollah, for decades.

"We support efforts for a ceasefire on the condition that it would be acceptable to the Lebanese people, acceptable to the resistance, and synchronized with a ceasefire in Gaza," Araqchi said. His words, though couched in diplomatic language, reveal a disturbing truth: Iran is dictating terms for peace in Lebanon, while its so-called "resistance" — Hezbollah — holds the country hostage.

In theory, Lebanon is a sovereign state. In practice, however, it has long been under the grip of Hezbollah, a militant organization that serves as a tool for Iran’s broader regional ambitions. Hezbollah wields immense political and military power within Lebanon, making it nearly impossible for the Lebanese government to operate independently.

Araqchi’s visit to Beirut, particularly during such volatile times, is a clear message that Iran stands with Hezbollah and the Shia community, reinforcing the deep-seated influence Tehran has over the country’s political landscape. This is not a gesture of solidarity; it is a reminder of the stranglehold Iran has maintained over Lebanon.

The true victims of this arrangement are the Lebanese people. For decades, they have suffered the consequences of living in a nation where decisions are often made in Tehran, not Beirut. Economic collapse, political instability, and constant threats of conflict have defined life in Lebanon, as Hezbollah prioritizes its allegiance to Iran over the well-being of its own people.

Hezbollah’s presence in Lebanon has effectively turned the country into a battleground for Iran’s regional conflicts, most notably with Israel. Ordinary Lebanese citizens bear the brunt of this proxy war, trapped in a state of perpetual instability.

Time for International Action

The international community cannot continue to watch from the sidelines, offering nothing more than empty condemnations and calls for peace. The reality is that Iran’s control over Lebanon is not just a Lebanese issue — it is a threat to regional stability. Allowing Hezbollah to maintain its stranglehold on Lebanon only serves to embolden Tehran and its ambitions across the Middle East.

The time has come for decisive action, not just words. International actors must recognize that Lebanon’s sovereignty is being eroded, and its people are being used as pawns in a broader geopolitical game. Diplomatic efforts must go beyond rhetoric and take tangible steps to curtail Hezbollah’s power and weaken Iran’s influence in Lebanon.
