Omar Hilale, Ambassador of Morocco to the United Nations, in collaboration with his US counterpart, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, has launched the Group of Friends on Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development.

This initiative marks a significant step towards leveraging AI to achieve global sustainability goals.

The establishment of this Group comes in the wake of the UN General Assembly's adoption of the first UN resolution on artificial intelligence, which garnered the support of 123 member states. This resolution underscores the vital role that AI can play in addressing some of the world's most pressing challenges, from climate change to economic inequality.

The Group of Friends on AI for Sustainable Development will benefit from the institutional backing of UNESCO and the International Communications Union (ITU). These organizations will co-chair the United Nations system's working group on artificial intelligence, providing essential guidance and resources to ensure the initiative's success.

The primary aim of the Group is to foster international cooperation and knowledge sharing on AI applications that can drive sustainable development. It will focus on:

Encouraging Research and Innovation: Promoting advancements in AI technology that align with sustainable development goals.

Policy Development: Assisting member states in formulating and implementing policies that support the ethical and responsible use of AI.

Capacity Building: Providing technical assistance and training to countries to enhance their capabilities in AI deployment.

With the backing of a diverse coalition of member states, the Group of Friends on AI for Sustainable Development is poised to make a significant impact. By harnessing the transformative power of artificial intelligence, this initiative aims to accelerate progress towards a more sustainable and equitable future.

The launch of this Group represents a collaborative effort to harness cutting-edge technology for the greater good. As AI continues to evolve, initiatives like this will be crucial in ensuring that its benefits are widely shared and contribute to the achievement of global sustainability goals.
