Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has failed to seize the opportunity to engage in dialogue with his people and facilitate the return of refugees during a period of relative calm in Syria, Qatar's Prime Minister said on Saturday.

Speaking at the Doha Forum, an international conference focused on political dialogue, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammad bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani criticized Assad's inaction on critical issues of national reconciliation and refugee repatriation.

"Mr. Assad has not seized the opportunity to engage in dialogue and rebuild trust with his people, and we have seen no serious initiative for the return of refugees or national reconciliation," Sheikh Al-Thani stated during the conference.

The comments highlight frustration over Assad's approach to Syria's ongoing humanitarian crisis. Millions of Syrians remain displaced both internally and in neighboring countries such as Lebanon, Jordan, and Turkey.

While international actors have called for measures to support the safe and voluntary return of refugees, there has been little progress on the ground.

The Doha Forum provides a platform for leaders, policymakers, and experts to discuss pressing global challenges. This year’s forum featured extensive discussions on the Middle East’s geopolitical dynamics, humanitarian crises, and pathways to sustainable development.
